Shire Studs
Shire Horse Breeders Australia dedicated to promoting the Shire Horse in Australia
Ahern Shires & Clydesdales
Ahern Shires and Clydesdales stud was founded in the 2016 with a singular passion for the heavy horses. Owned and operated by the Arthur-Ellis family, this multi-generational family-owned and operated stud is located in the Southern Tablelands, near Braidwood. Together the family focuses on breeding traditional horses with modern versatility, temperament, and action, suitable for a range of disciplines (led, ridden, harness, breeding). Ahern traditionally breeds a limited amount of foals each year, with a mix of Shires and Clydesdales in each annual drop. For more information – Visit:

Belleview Shire Horse Stud

Belleview Shires are a boutique stud dedicated to preserving the Shire breed in Australia.

After purchasing our first shire gelding in 2011, Southern Cross Kenworth, a passion and enthusiasm for this majestic breed was born, and the interest in showcasing the versatility of the Shire not only in breed classes but under saddle and in harness.

We are located in Tarampa, SE QLD, only an hour west of Brisbane, and produce quality horses, suitable for all disciplines. We have limited foals available each year, and established horses occasionally. For more information or any enquiries please visit our page: https://www.facebook.com/belleviewshires

Darkmoor Shires & Clydesdales
Cai and Emma Thomas have both owned and loved horses for most of their lives. Some years ago, they bought a Shire cross Clydesdale gelding as a riding horse and before long decided he needed a girlfriend to keep him company. Tullymore Leonie, a Clydesdale mare, arrived two months later. As is so often the case with horses, one was not enough! Six months, four mares and a stallion later – and with the help of some very welcoming heavy horse veterans – Darkmoor Shire & Clydesdale Stud was born.

The stud’s goal is to breed high quality, well rounded horses that are versatile enough to make lifelong partners in whatever discipline is chosen by their owners. Darkmoor has bred and owned many successful show horses, including several Sydney Royal Easter Show Supreme Exhibits. Cai & Emma have spent years supporting both breeds by showing successfully, sponsoring classes at agricultural and breed shows, running training days and serving on various show and breed committees. Cai is also a well-respected heavy horse judge. Darkmoor foals are handled from birth and some are for sale each breeding season. The stud is located just outside Braidwood, about an hour from Canberra.

Grevillea Lodge

Grevillea Lodge Heavy Horse Stud is a boutique stud established in 2005 to produce quality working horses. Our focus is on producing sound horses with the versatility and temperament to suit most disciplines. We branched out to breeding after running a family owned horse drawn carriage hire business since 1995.

We produce small numbers of foals each year which are handled from birth to the time of departure to their new homes. We are very proud to have had many foals purchased by buyers who have purchased from us previously. Our first Stallion was purchased in 2005, a Clydesdale Stallion Lavereen Tiger Balm. Tiger comes from imported line Dillars Benedictine.

We purchased our first Shire Stallion Beandema Samson in 2007. He has been successfully shown from 2007 to 2013 winning multiple championships. He is still standing at stud and also working in harness. We purchased Shire stallion Southern Cross Ace of Spades 2017. Ace comes from imported semen Fifield Jack Of Diamonds out of a Mare bred from Walton Supreme. Our aim is to promote both of these magnificent breeds as much as possible to keep them viable in Australia.

Tullymore Clydesdale & Shire Horse Stud

Having still worked his family’s farm horse in the fields as a young boy Maurice was always passionate about draught horses but in particular Clydesdales and Shires. In the 1970s he established Tullymore Park Clydesdale Stud and went on to receive major awards at Royal shows for his Clydesdales. In the 1990s he imported Clydesdale stallions from Northern Ireland and Scotland. Maurice became the first Australian Shire Horse Judge on Shire Horse Society UK panel on passing his assessment in 1999, and consequently Australia’s first international heavy horse judge. Imported semen and imported Shire stallion Arclid Adonis kicked his Shire breeding program off.
Together with his wife Jutta, a highly respected international Shire Horse UK panel judge as well, they are breeding the finest Clydesdale and Shire Horses and outstanding show winners of both, the Clydesdale and the Shire Horse breed as well as of combined driving harness horses based on Australian and European bloodlines. The stud’s top Shires include Royal Show and National Champions Tullymore Sir Lancealot, Tullymore Eugenia, Tullymore Sir William, Tullymore Iris and Tullymore Melaleuca.
They are producing a small number of foals every year. All Tullymore foals are handled from the day they are born, with plenty of exposure on the farm and in town to things they might face in their future careers, some will also see the inside of a show ring. Once they turn yearlings they will live in the herd and get a brush-up on social horse behavior. Tullymore horses are very people oriented and will usually suit a range of different purposes according to the stud motto ‘Intelligence – Elegance – Strength’.
